Healthy Foods

Food and nutrition are two closely related but not identical things. Nutrition is what the people need to stay healthy, while food is anything than can satisfy hunger. Top 8 healthy foods for selection are as follows:

Apples: Apples have good amounts of soluble and insoluble dietary fiber as well as vitamin C. They contain many phytonutrients, such as quercetin, catechin, phloridzin, and chlorogenic acid that act as antioxidants.

Almonds: These nuts are packed with nutrients -- fiber, riboflavin, magnesium, iron, calcium and vitamin E, a natural antioxidant. There is consensus among the medical community that almonds decrease the risk for heart disease. Medical studies found that eating one ounce of almonds daily, as part of a healthy lifestyle, reduces LDL.

Broccoli: This vegetable is rich in several common nutrients. It has been reported that broccoli contains a chemical called sulforaphen, which can activate certain enzymes that are thought to play a role in detoxifying carcinogenic chemicals. Broccoli contains the antioxidant beta-carotene and is also an excellent source of vitamin C.

Blueberries: Today blueberries have been found to be a healthy food containing high levels or iron; vitamin A, C and E; bacterial inhibitors and folic acid. Regular intake of blueberries may improve short-term memory and reduce the cellular damage associated with aging.

Red beans: They are inexpensive sources of protein, minerals and vitamins. Small red, pinto and dark red kidney varieties -- are an excellent low-fat source of antioxidants, protein, dietary fiber and copper. They’re also a good source of iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium and thiamin.

Salmon: The value of salmon as a healthy food is primarily due to their extremely high concentration of omega-3 fatty acids. Salmon is also low in saturated fat and cholesterol and is a good source of protein.

Spinach: Spinach is exceptionally high in beta carotene and is rich in other vitamins and minerals particularly folacin. It also contains more protein than most vegetable. The plant compounds in spinach may boost your immune system and help prevent certain types of cancer.
