*Enjoy your food
*Eat lots of different foods
*Eat the right amount to stay a healthy weight
*Eat plenty of foods rich in starch and fiber
*Don’t eat too much saturated fat
*Don’t eat sugary foods too often
*Look after the vitamins and minerals in your foods
*If you drink alcohol, keep within sensible limits
To become healthy, people must change their eating habits and learn which foods are good for them, and which are not. They must eat well-balanced meals – featuring fruits, vegetables, whole grains and the proper proportion of fats, carbohydrates and protein.
Most people need:
*Vegetables and fruit
*Grain foods
*Reduced fat milk, yoghurt and cheese variety
*Lean meats, poultry, fish eggs, nuts and seeds
*Water instead of soft drinks, cordials, energy drinks, sports and sweetened fruit juices
Keys to a healthy diet
*Keep your total fat intake at or below 30 percent of your total daily calories
*Limit your intake of saturated fat to less than one third of the calories derived from fat
*Keep your cholesterol intake at 300 mgs per day or less
*Eat a diet high in complex carbohydrates
*Maintain a moderate protein intake
*Eat a variety of foods
*Avoid too much sugar
*Limit your sodium intake to no more than 2,400 mgs per day
*Maintain an adequate calcium intake
*Try to get vitamins and minerals from foods, not from supplements
*Consider taking supplements of the antioxidant vitamins E and C as well as beta carotene
*Maintain a desirable weight
*If drinking alcohol, do so in moderation
