Introduction to food technology

Food technology is the use of science to improve the growing, harvesting, processing, packaging, distribution, cooking and storage of food. It makes use of the latest discoveries in science and the latest development in technology.

The aim of studying food technology is to develop skills and knowledge to design and make good quality food products. It is the process involved in the conversion of raw materials to edible food products including meals.

Most developments in the field of food technology have been oriented toward improving food processing and products more conveniently, more efficient, at less cost and with higher quality and safety levels.

Before foods are ready to be sold in the shops, food products go through a series of test and studies to make sure that they are:
*Safe to eat
*Good to eat
*Easy to eat
*Well packaged
*A reasonable price

Food technology helps people to understand the physical, chemical, nutritional biological and sensory properties of foods and how to exploit these properties when designing and making food products.
