Intelligent packaging refers to packaging that sense and informs.
It was defined as ‘an integral part or inherent property of a pack, product or pack/product configuration, which confers intelligence appropriate to the function and use of the product itself.’
Intelligent packaging monitors the condition of packaged food or the environment surrounding the food. The system monitors the condition of packaged foods to give information about the quality of the packaged food during transport and storage.
This packaging can provide assurance of pack integrity tamper evidence, product safety, and quality and are being utilized in applications, such as product authenticity, anti-theft and product traceability.
In broader sense, an intelligent packaging can provide information on the product and its origin as such and reveal, for example, rough physical handling of the package and protect the product from tampering and pilferage.
Intelligent packaging can be divided into categories: simple intelligent packaging, interactive or responsive intelligent.
